Students from West Hawaii Explorations Academy cleaned up Wawaloli Beach on their first week back at school.

Middle school keiki spent Friday morning picking up trash along the Natural Energy Lab of Hawaii Authority shoreline.

“It teaches them to take care of their environment, their place.” said sixth-grade teacher Joy Salinas.

Students bagged the trash and collected broken glass in plastic buckets, taking their refuse back to the school where they catalogued, counted and weighed the items.

Sixth-grade student Fatu Fuga said he loves the ocean and wants to malama the aina by helping out at cleanups.

“I wish people didn’t litter the beach so much,” said Fuga. “Litter is not safe for other people or the ocean.”
